Textile-to-textile recycling uses material from discarded textiles to produce fibers for new textiles. Unlike recycled polyester made from other waste streams, such as plastic bottles, it aims to keep textile materials within the textile system. Its wider adoption still depends on effective collection and sorting systems, consistent material quality and sufficient recycling capacity.
Mono-material design approaches the challenge from another direction. By reducing the number of materials used in a fabric or product, it can make sorting and recycling easier at the end of its useful life. LaMunt applied this principle to selected fleece products, using 100% polyester fabrics and removing unnecessary components made from other materials. Some zippers and trims still need to be removed before recycling, as polyester alternatives did not meet the required performance standards. Since suitable textile collection and recycling systems are also not widely available, Oberalp describes the products as designed with circularity in mind rather than as fully circular or fully recyclable.
Oberalp is investing in circularity because products account for the largest share of the Group’s measured climate impact. Its internal Corporate Carbon Footprints for 2024 and 2025 showed that more than 80% is linked to products, with fabric production representing a particularly significant share.
